A blast from the Past: How to style 90's fashion

I was recently invited to a 1990's party and like the giddy pre-teen version of myself, I was excited to raid my closest ,as well as the deepest parts of my memory bank, to find some of my favorite1990's looks. In a time where 2pac was the King of rap, Beavis and Butthead took the adult cartoon comedy world by a storm, and A Different World amongst many other popular sitcoms ruled the t.v. airways....take a walk down memory lane with me.

Here are a few of my favorite 1990's looks.

#1:Round FRAME FASHION GLASSES

When it comes to any 90's look, the accessories are a must have, and the Round Frame Sunglasses were definitely a staple. These sunglasses were the go to look for many 1990's celebs such as Bobby Brown, Salt N. Pepa, and Heavy D just to name a few. Even in today's present time I have witnessed celebs like R & B songstress H.E.R rocking these as a part her everyday wardrobe. They were under $10 and purchased from www.shein.com

#2: Oversized graphic T-SHIRT

Can you say Crazy, Sexy, Cool. You can't think of 90's fashion and music without mentioning the iconic R & B group TLC. In my opinion their 90's style had a mixture or masculinity and femininity, hence the baggy jeans and oversized T-shirts. This particular graphic T-shirt was purchased for under $20 on www.fashionnova.com

#3:Daisy Dukes

Look at those girls with the Daisy dukes...a song released by the rap group the 69 Boyz in 1993. The urban dictionary describes the term Daisy Dukes as "extremely short, form fitting, denim cut-off shorts worn by women originally in the American South "and being a Mississippi raised girl, I have worn my share of them. To me Daisy Dukes are a symbol of liberation and celebrating our bodies and not hiding them in shame. Pairing them with an oversized T-shirt is definitely reminiscent of the style of the nineties as well as my pre-teen years. This particular pair was purchased from Shein.com for under $20.

#4:knit Crop Top and Crochet Bucket hat with wide leg jeans

Next we have the knit crop top and baggy mom jeans, paired with the knitted bucket hat. I mean who could forget this look, can we say Blossom or a little bit of nickelodeon's Clarissa

Explains it All, or even Topanga of Boy Meets World in the early days. Bucket hats were made popular in the 80's by legends like LL Cool J and Run DMC, so much so that it carried on to the 90's and are still worn by retro style loving teenagers and young adults today.

#5:Fiddler beret, Halter Top Vest, and Skort

Next we have the ultimate 90's statement pieces; the fiddler beret, halter top vest, and

skort. Although halter tops are usually best for the the summer, since this one is also a vest, I paired it with an off the shoulder bodysuit. For those who don't know, the term skort is a combination of a skirt and shorts and was a staple in many women and teenagers wardrobes in the 90's. Call me nostalgic, but I love to see these pieces of clothing come back to the 21st century I have to say it's exciting because you get the look of a skirt but the comfort of shorts. Lastly, I added the round frame sunglasses and the ultimate nineties accessory, a lace choker necklace. Fiddler hat purchased on Amazon.com for under $20, link added above.

#6:Plaid crop top, ripped jeans, bucket hat

Last, but not least of my nostalgic 90's looks, is what we call the grunge look. Ripped jeans, plaid cropped tops and a bucket hat to complete the look. Pair this with a chain belt and combat boots (not pictured) to complete the look. I love this look because there is just something enticing about the sexy tomboy look, mixing masculinity and femininity together is always a fun vibe for me. Can I just add the fact that my braids are also a 90's vibe, I can't believe that we called them Dookie braids back in the day, I must say that I am glad we elevated to the term Box braids instead, for obvious reasons. I purchased the hat from amazon.com and the shirt and pants from shein.com all under $25 each.

I enjoyed traveling down memory lane for these looks, so much of today's cultural inspirations mimic the 90's. From fashion, to movies, and most definitely music. If you ever decide to throw or attend a 90's party or just want to relive some of your favorite looks, I hope that you will draw some inspiration from these styles, they are the Bomb if I do say so myself. lol
